The process of getting a Green Card and attaining lawful permanent residence can be achieved through several methods.
The first step is to determine which form of sponsorship is availabe for the beneficiary. Whether it is a family, business, educational, investment, etc. Once determined, then the person who will be the sponsor of the beneficiary will submit the appropriate application on their behalf.
If a family member will be sponsoring the beneficiary, then the sponsoring family member will need to submit a I-130 form, once the form is approved the beneficiary will receive an interview with their local consulate. Once the interview is complete and a visa is granted for the beneficiary to enter the U.S., then the beneficiary will be allowed to enter, where he will then submit an application for his actual green card and lawful permanent residence.
The process for the different methods of attaining lawful permanent residence is very similar, only that the application forms and qualifications are different depending on whether it is business related, family related, etc.
And for purposes of marriage, the beneficiary may enter prior to marriage and official family status through a fiance visa.
